Frequently Asked Questions
1. What does Mountain Communities SPCA do?
Our mission is to rescue abandoned, stray, and neglected dogs and cats in the Frazier Mountain communities. We provide temporary foster homes, permanent adoptions, obtain veterinary care including spay/neuter, and provide education on the humane treatment of animals.
2. Are you linked to Shelter on the Hill?
No, they are a separate organization whose mission is to build an animal shelter in Lebec.
3. Could you help me get my dog or cat spayed?
Yes, we work with Fix Nation, a Los Angeles-based spay/neuter organization which focuses on cats. We work with AngelDogs Foundation, a mobile spay/neuter organization, a one-day events to spay/neuter dogs. Currently we have scheduled a spay/neuter day for cats on October 6, 2009. To sign up please call 245-2689.
5. How much does it cost to neuter a dog or a cat?
For the October 6, 2009 event for cats, thanks to a generous donation of vouchers from AngelDogs, you can have your cat spay/neutered for $20, which includes a rabies vaccination and microchip. Watch for upcoming events for dogs. The price for dogs at these one-day events is $55 to the owner. AngelDogs donates $55 to cover its cost of $110 for each dog. Again, a microchip and rabies vaccination is included in the price. Other services are available on request.
6. Can you help pay for the neutering costs?
Sometimes, depending on our donation income, we can pick up the entire costs of the procedure. Sometimes we ask you to pay what you can, and set up a reimbursement plan for you to pay off the bill on an installment basis.
7. Are our donations tax deductible?
Yes, we are a charitable non profit organization. Our IRS # is 26-3183727.
8. Do you ever need volunteers?
Yes! We need volunteers to make runs to the vet, work in our twice yearly Barn Sale, temporarily foster kittens and puppies, socialize feral kittens by petting and playing with them, help with administrative work, make phone calls, and bake dog treats—and people treats for sale at events. We also need fundraising help, a web and database administrator.
9. What are your sources of financial support?
We are pursuing foundation grants, seeking out individual donors, holding Barn Sales in Cuddy Valley, and encouraging individuals to raise funds for us by holding small parties in their homes for their friends.
10. Do you help animals only in PMC? And just dogs and cats?
No, we find homes for animals throughout the Greater Frazier Mountain area. We can also connect you with exotic animal and wildlife rescuers.
11. What do you do about feral cats?
We trap feral cats, take them for neutering and vet care, and release them in an area where a volunteer will continue to put out food for them. If we can trap kittens, we put them in the home of a volunteer who will feed and handle them, thereby turning them into adoptable kitten that we find homes for.
12. Where are you located?
We meet in members' homes to do our work so that we can spend the money we raise on critical things like spay/neuter of animals and vet bills.
